Help for Long Covid
If you have spoken to others with this condition, you might well have wondered if this is a single condition. Everyone seems to have their own unique combinations of symptoms and challenges. So much remains unknown, and probably will for some time because one person’s long COVID and another’s are not the same. The symptoms, which often include brain fog, breathing dysfunction, and fatigue, all conspire to also take away mental health.
That has been my experience from working with people who have long COVID, which is particularly new in New Zealand. The many faces of the condition require not only a personalised but also holistic approach. I use the holistic framework of yoga therapy and also the most gentle elements of Buteyko breathing to tailor recovery-focused programmes and one-on-one sessions that aren’t just unique to my clients overall, but are tailored to wherever they are at on the day. Because I know that when you have long COVID, every day can be different, and what was easy yesterday, may not be feasible today.
The sessions and programmes are not yoga class yoga, given what many people with long COVID do have in common, the foundations include breath-work and practicing relevant breathing techniques to help you breathe with greater ease, often modified to be more accessible. Sessions and programmes also include guided relaxation to calm the nervous system, and very gentle movement to support the health of joints and muscles, and to strengthen the cardiovascular system without worsening fatigue.
