In the yoga book, The Science of Breath, written over a century ago, Yogi Ramacharaka said this about nostril vs mouth breathing: 'One of the first lessons in the Yogi Science of Breath is to learn how to breathe through the nostrils, and to overcome the common practise of mouth-breathing'. It seems that little has changed over the past hundred years - if anything the prevalence of mouth breathing has increased.

Yogi Ramacharaka surmises that many of the diseases to which civilised man is subject are undoubtedly due to dysfunctional breathing.
